Shellac
Shellac is a natural polymer extracted from the secretion of the female lac bug (Kerria lacca) found in the forests of Assam and Thailand. The type of host tree affects the colour of the resin. Originally harvested for use in dye, shellac resin eventually became the main ingredient of French polish . During the Victorian Era it replaced beeswax and oil as the preferred finish for fine furniture and musical instruments.
Shellac is edible and is often used as a glaze on pills and candies (M & M’s), as well as a replacement for the natural wax of apples.
My French Polish contains several other non-toxic tree resins: Sandarac, Gum Mastic, Gum Benjamin and Copal in proportions calculated to increase the hardness, heat resistance and super-shine of the finish.
